 Convergence® 2024 Skein Competition and Exhibit

A spinning competition with the entered and judged works on display throughout the 4-day Convergence® Marketplace.
 
Dates: July 11-14, 2024 to be held at the Century II Performing Arts & Convention Center, Wichita, Kansas
 
Eligibility: All work must be the creation of the participant alone, clean and odor-free and must have been completed within the past two years.
 
Skein Submission Guidelines:
  • All skeins should weigh 2 ounces minimum (or, if finer than 20 wpi, contain at least 40 yards), and be neatly wound to a circumference of 1.5 to 2 yards, with both ends of the skein tied together. Skeins may be either naturally colored or dyed.
  • Skeins should be secured in at least four places using figure eight ties and yarn that matches the skein and washed to set the twist.
  • Attach a removable 3x5 card label with your entry information on each skein: (1) Your Name, (2) Category, (3) Fiber Content, (4) Grist, (5) Fiber Preparation, (6) Description of Techniques Used, and (7) Intended Use.
Skein Entry Categories: Skeins may be entered into any of the following categories:
  • Singles yarn (100% wool)
  • Multi-ply yarn (100% wool)
  • Novelty-spun yarn (any fiber)
  • Animal blend fibers (can be a blend of animal and non-animal fibers no more than 50% wool)
  • Non-animal fibers
Presentation of Work: All skeins must be sent ready to show and exhibit. All skeins must remain on display until the conclusion of the exhibit in the Convergence® Marketplace.
 
Entry Fees per Skein: $3 - HGA Members or $5 - Non-Members
 
Judging: Judging criteria for skeins will include overall appearance (draft control, appropriate grist for fiber, finishing); singles (integrity, uniformity, appropriate twist); plying (consistency, balance); dyeing/blending; appropriate presentation; and appropriateness for intended use. The judge reserves the right to combine or divide categories at will, move a skein to a more appropriate category without penalty to the participant and/or disqualify a skein that doesn’t follow the rules set forth. The judge’s decisions are final. Entry fees will not be refunded for disqualified skeins. Judge will select first, second, and third place per category.
 
Award Presentation: Judging will take place on Thursday, July 11, 2024. Award winners will be announced during the Keynote on Sunday, July 14, 2024. Award Prizes (for each category): $15 First Place, $10 Second Place, and $5 Third Place
 
Entry Procedure: The deadline to register is July 10, 2024. You must complete a registration form for each separate entry.
 
Shipping: Entered skeins must be mailed to HGA and received by HGA by July 5, 2024, or delivered in person to the Convergence® registration desk by 9 AM on July 11, 2024. Work should be packed well and shipped in a reusable container. Artists must pay all shipping and insurance costs. Return pre-paid postage and return mail address must be included with your submission to the HGA office. If arranged in advance, items may be available for pickup at the HGA Registration Desk at the Hyatt Regency Wichita on Monday, July 15, 2024.
